It’s awkward for me to write this, since I can’t help but worry it makes me look like I’m wildly angling for birthday recognition. I’m so totally not. I’m trying to document ONLY how ridiculously overlooked by Greta I feel. In doing so, I can’t help but make it seem that birthday greetings are a big thing for me. THEY’RE NOT. The big thing is Greta’s not acknowledging my birthday, given our history and her current heavy reliance on me for emotional and intellectual support.

For the sake of the record, therefore, Greta called me seven times yesterday, sometimes calling one number, then the other, then the first again. She left two messages. One of those times we spoke about how well her class she taught on Beloved and her presentation she gave on Lolita went (as we suspected she remained awake and artificially stimulated through the night previous). The discussion initiated in class by her presentation had provoked her to rethink Lolita in some way, and she wanted to bounce some ideas about the novel off me. I’d been planning to take a bath just then, I told her. I refrained from revealing I was doing so in preparation for my X’s taking me and the kids out to a fancy dinner for my birthday. So she said I should just call her back later.

She never acknowledged that it was my birthday. I called her back an equal number of times—even within five minutes of her last message, both before and after it—but she never picked up.

In total, between November 30 and December 1, Greta called me more than a dozen times. She needed me. I tried to help. She never once mentioned my birthday. I left her an angry message at the end of the day.

She just has nothing to give, only to take.
